A Batesburg-Leesville man is in jail today after authorities said he body-slammed a locked door in a secure area of the Lexington Medical Center until it broke open, then stole a car he immediately crashed into a house and then a tree.
Tavares Donell Brunson, 24, of Honeysuckle Lane, has been charged with grand larceny, leaving the scene of an accident involving damages and driving a motor vehicle while not possessing a driver?s license in connection with a motor vehicle collision, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department said.
There were no injuries in the incident.
Around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Brunson was a patient in an area of the hospital's emergency room secured by a magnetic lock, spokeswoman Jennifer Wilson said. She said he repeatedly body-slammed the door with such force that the lock eventually failed.
With alarms sounding and the unit's public safety officer three feet behind him, Brunson fled the hospital.
