DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) ? A woman who survived a strong storm in northeastern South Carolina said Monday it reminded her of Hurricane Hugo nearly 22 years ago.
A storm that struck in Darlington on Sunday night knocked out power, toppled fences, and damaged two schools and several homes. The National Weather Service was trying to determine Monday if it was a tornado that hit the area, as spotters reported.
Three people suffered minor injuries.
Ellon Bacote lives in Darlington near one of the damaged schools and said one of her chimneys fell on her roof.
"This is the first time we've actually experienced a tornado, though Hugo messed us up pretty bad," referring to the 1989 hurricane that came ashore north of Charleston and headed into North Carolina before it was downgraded to a tropical storm.
