Feds hear concerns about oil search off Carolinas

Apr 27, 2010 4:05:00 AM - thestate.com
Federal officials want to know what people think about the search for oil and natural gas off the coast of the Carolinas.

The U.S. Interior Department's Minerals Management Service holds two hearings on Tuesday in North Charleston.

Federal, state and local agencies as well as interested parties can discuss issues to be covered in an environmental impact statement on the search plan.

Searching for oil includes such activities as seismic surveys, sidescan sonar surveys and electromagnetic surveys. The impact statement will discuss whether the oil search may harm marine life and the natural environment.

Last month, the Obama administration announced plans to open up offshore waters on the East Coast to oil and gas exploration.
