Police have closed Interstate 85 in Davidson County, N.C., and are involved in a standoff with a man whom they say led them on a 180-mile, two-state pursuit overnight.
The man was identified by Julia Jarema, of the N.C. Department of Crime Control, as "a homicide and arson suspect."
The pursuit started in South Carolina and went through Charlotte during the early-morning hours. There are several reports that the man being pursued by police fired a number of shots during the pursuit.
At 7:30 a.m., the man was sitting in his truck in the middle of I-85 near mile marker 90, not far from Lexington, N.C., and is refusing police requests to get out. He was surrounded by SWAT units from a number of law enforcement agencies.
As a result, I-85 is closed between mile markers 89 and 91, and a Lexington radio station reports traffic is backed up for 10 miles or more in each direction. Traffic is being detoured through the city.
