SC legislators to debate 24-hour wait for abortion

South Carolina legislators will try to reach a compromise on a bill to require women seeking an abortion to wait at least a day after getting an ultrasound or reviewing information on the procedure.
House and Senate members are to meet Tuesday to try to hash out differences in the legislation each chamber passed.
Both versions would increase the wait time from one hour to one day.
House members want to tie the 24-hour clock to an ultrasound, requiring the woman to make two trips to the clinic. Opponents say that would create a burden, especially for poor, rural women who may have to take two days off work.
The Senate removed the two-trip requirement. Its version would allow women to download the information about the procedure from their computer a day before going to a clinic.
