Battle brewing over cross at SC fire station

A group that supports the separation of religion and state wants a cross removed from a South Carolina fire station.
But lawyers for Charleston said Tuesday the cross was put up legally to honor nine city firefighters killed in a furniture store blaze three years ago.
The fight over the cross is an extension of the battle between Freedom from Religion Foundation and the city of Charleston that began last December over a nativity scene at the same station. The city agreed to put secular decorations like snowmen alongside the nativity scene to comply with the law.
The foundation sent a letter to the city last week threatening to sue if the cross is not removed.
