Drop-outs could lose right to drive

Apr 29, 2010 2:55:00 PM - thestate.com
S.C. teens who drop out of school, are expelled or have seven or more unexcused absences could lose the right to drive.

By a 67 to 29 vote Thursday, House lawmakers approved a bill that would revoke drivers' licenses or prohibit the acquisition of licenses by 15, 16, and 17 year olds who meet one of those three criteria.

Working teens who support themselves or their families could keep their licenses.

The bill affects public, private and home-schooled students. The bill needs one more vote of approval in the House. Then, two-thirds of senators must agree to take it up.

About 20 others states including North Carolina and Georgia have similar laws.
