Domestic tabby in SC adopts abandoned bobcats

Apr 29, 2010 2:52:00 PM - thestate.com
Three abandoned bobcat newborns in South Carolina are getting help from their extended family.

Carolina Wildlife Care officials on Thursday introduced a domestic gray tabby named Zoe who is nursing the days-old bobcats along with her own weeks-old kittens.

The bobcats were rescued from an abandoned home in Newberry County after it had been demolished.

Wildlife Care executive director Joanna Weitzel says rescuers tried to reunite the bobcats with their mother. When that failed, state wildlife officials contacted her organization.

The bobcats will be weaned in five to six weeks, but will need up to 18 months in a specially built habitat to learn to live on their own in the wild. Wildlife Care is hoping to raise money to help with those expenses.
