About 50 members of the South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing are making history as they get ready to go overseas to support of the U.S. military effort in Iraq.
Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Les Carroll said the unit is sending F-16 fighter jets, pilots and support crews to southwest Asia over the coming week, with the first contingent leaving Thursday.
In all, about 300 airmen will be deploying for four months.
It is the first time the unit has deployed overseas since a 2007 agreement put 150 active duty airmen from Shaw Air Force Base alongside Air National Guard members in the same unit on a full-time basis.
The 169th deployed in 2003, when its members flew more than 400 combat missions over Iraq.
