From the early 1950s until 1969, a network of dozens of Strutzel Root Beer stands dotted northern Illinois and popped up in Florida, Louisiana, even in exotic locales like Nebraska.
In his Bloomingdale garage, Dave Strutzel has what's left of an institution: a porcelain-coated metal sign of white with orange letters that spell "Strutzel's Root Beer." He used to have a few metal chairs and a table, but those are gone now.
