The Center for Birds of Prey on the South Carolina coast is standing by to treat birds coated with oil from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday that the Coast Guard has asked the center to stand by to help. Center executive director Jim Elliott says as many as 300 birds could be sent to the facility northeast of Charleston. He says the center might also send workers to the Gulf.
The center established a hospital two years ago to treat oiled birds. Elliott says it's the only such hospital on the East Coast.
