Horry County authorities pulled a dead leatherback turtle out of the water in the Myrtle Beach section of Horry County, said Sgt. Phillip Cain, of the Myrtle Beach Police Department Beach Patrol.
The turtle was found sometime between noon and 12:30 p.m. Monday near Ocean Lakes Campground at 6001 S. Kings Highway, said Cain, who said Myrtle Beach authorities assisted the Horry County Police.
The turtle was wrapped in a crab pot, and the crab pot buoy was still attached to the turtle, Cain said.
“I think someone saw it out there and didn't know what it was,” Cain said. “They saw the mass near the buoy and went to investigate.”
