It was the marvellous century from former skipper Mahela Jayawardena that saved the blushes for Sri Lanka and helped them to a 14-run victory over Zimbabwe in a rain-marred ICC World Cup Twenty20 game at the Providence Stadium in a Guyana on Monday.
Rain that came down in buckets when the Zimbabweans started their reply required that the famous twins Duckworth and Lewis take strike to bring about a decision and according to their requirements Sri Lanka were winners in a revised game.
To Jayawardena it was a once in a life time knock by the likeable right hander that highlighted this clash. From the moment he took strike,he set the stadium alight with some copy book and stylish strokes that sent, not only the spectators taking in the action on the ground into raptures, but also had the TV commentators stuck for adjectives to describe this super fine innings.
