Ananda Dabare conducts the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka on May 23, 2010, in an exciting concert where two major compositions of the Romantic era, Tchaikovsky’s fourth symphony and Rachmaninov’s first piano will be performed.
The concert opens with two excerpts from Grieg’s ever popular Peer Gynt suites. Grieg’s piano concerto which Rachmaninov greatly admired, served as a model for Racmaninov’s first piano concerto. The soloist in the concerto will be the US based Sri Lankan pianist, Harsha Abeyaratne.
Colombo audiences will no doubt remember his superb recital in 2002 at the Russian Centre featuring the works of Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Debussy and Chopin. Though not as popular as his second and third piano concertos, Rachmaninov’s first piano concerto is an immensely enjoyable work, full of youthful impetuosity and brilliance.
