A top official with a private South Carolina college is asking a court to block the school's founding church denomination from appointing new trustees.
The lawsuit accuses the governing body of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of illegally removing nearly half of Erskine College's board earlier this month and appointing 14 new members. The lawsuit seeks to disband the interim board, and seeks a temporarily restraining order against the denomination.
Erskine board chairman Scott Mitchell sued Wednesday in Abbeville.
A spokesman for the Due West school emphasized Thursday the lawsuit was filed in Erskine's name but did not come from the administration, which oversees daily operations.
Phone messages left with officials of the Greenville-based denomination were not immediately returned.
