A crime lab is opening on the South Carolina coast to help analyze DNA.
The Beaufort Gazette reported Wednesday the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department has opened the new lab. The State Law Enforcement Division's lab in Columbia handles cases from across the state.
Richland County and Greenville County also have labs.
Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner says the new lab will reduce the time it takes to analyze evidence. It is expected to have a turnaround in about 30 days.
Last year SLED officials reported a backlog of 3,000 cases at their lab. Beaufort authorities say they sometimes wait months or even years for DNA analysis from SLED.
