More than 50 soldiers from 35 countries who have nearly completed basic training are to be sworn in as American citizens at a South Carolina Army post.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokeswoman Chris Rhatigan (RAT'-ih-gan) says 53 soldiers are taking the oath at Fort Jackson on Thursday, one day before they graduate from basic training.
Rhatigan says the soldiers have to pass the same tests as anyone else, but the normal four-month-long process is expedited because of their military service. She says the service has naturalized more than 58,300 service members since 2001.
USCIS associate director Debra Rogers is to administer the oath of allegiance.
