The state Department of Education is laying off 80 employees today and Friday including internal auditors, curriculum specialists and staffers who help schools implement technology.
"We're losing a tremendous amount of experience and expertise," said Superintendent of Education Jim Rex who spent Thursday delivering the news to employees. "At a time when classes are getting bigger, when schools need more help than ever, we're taking away the support institution that coordinates it all."
This latest round of cuts comes on top of the elimination of 120 other agency positions through attrition.
Rex said his agency employed about 1,000 people when he took office nearly four years ago. After this latest round of cuts, the number of employees is below 800.
