A loaded gun that fell out of the pants of a 24-year-old convicted felon at a family gathering was picked up by a 3-year-old, who then pulled the trigger and killed a 5-year-old, Richland County authorities said Sunday.
The convicted felon, Waddell McGhee, is now charged with homicide by child abuse and behind bars at the Richland County Detention Center, said Richland County Sheriff?s spokeswoman Monique Mack.
Adonis Grimes, died after being shot around 6 p.m. on the front lawn of a dwelling at 1028 Rockymount Road, Mack said. The home is located off Crane Church Road north of Columbia.
The boy was still alive when relatives brought him to the Palmetto Health Richland, but died shortly after his arrival.
McGhee is the uncle of both children involved in the incident, Mack said.
