Gov. Mark Sanford and a female guest spent the weekend in the Florida Keys, but Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer?s office said the two-term Republican governor did not notify Bauer that he was leaving the state.
Sanford and a dark-haired woman had a three-day reservation this weekend at the Cheeca Lodge and Spa in Islamorada, Megan Sterritt with the KWE group confirmed this afternoon. The KWE group is a public relations firm based near Miami.
Ben Fox, the governor?s communications director, said that Sanford took personal time over the weekend, and this trip was paid for personally.
"Over that time staff has been in regular contact with him," Fox said. "The governor has long moved past discussing matters in his personal life publicly."
The State Law Enforcement Division would not say whether Sanford was accompanied by a security detail or whether he notified the agency of his whereabouts.
