By a vote of 33-13, the S.C. Senate today overrode Gov. Mark Sanfords veto of a bill to raise the states cigarette tax.
The move clears the way to increase the states cigarette tax to 57 cents a pack from seven cents, effective July 1.
Sanford vetoed the tax hike Tuesday, saying again he would not approve a tax hike without an offsetting tax cut.
The S.C. House Wednesday overrode Sanfords veto.
Todays vote ends a decade-long effort to raise the states cigarette tax, a move originally pushed to cut smoking, particularly among teens, but revived by the states plummeting revenues.
