Lexington woman pleads guilty to fraud

May 14, 2010 9:03:00 AM - thestate.com
A Lexington woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Thursday.

Linda Hamel Bacon, 49, will be sentenced at a later date.

According to the U.S. attorney, Bacon stole last November a driver’s license from an individual’s car and used it for two months to pass checks she had stolen from bill payment envelopes in residential mailboxes. Bacon washed the ink off the stolen checks so that new information could be written on them, made

payable to her false identity. Investigators estimate that Bacon obtained more than $6,000 using the stolen checks and driver’s license.

Bacon faces a mandatory minimum sentence of two years on the identity theft charge and a maximum possible penalty of $1,000,000 and 30 years imprisonment on the bank fraud charge.
