A South Carolina congressman diagnosed with Parkinson's disease lashed out Tuesday at the National Republican Congressional Committee for issuing a statement he is losing his memory.
Democratic Rep. John Spratt characterized the GOP statement that called him an "amnesiac" as "a sly, underhanded reference" to his ailment.
"There are many reasons to run again, but I would never consider it if I did not have the energy, motivation, and mental ability to do this job, and do it well," Spratt said in a statement.
He said he has only a slight tremor in his hand and slightly stooped posture but no loss of mental capacity.
The national GOP statement issued Monday about the 67-year-old House Budget Committee chairman contained six bold-lettered allegations that he's forgetting what's happening in Washington.
