South Carolina law officers are receiving special training on how to respond in especially dangerous situations.
The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy says the training on Thursday at the old campus of Sanders Middle School in Columbia is made possible through a Department of Homeland Security grant.
Officers are learning how to deal with hostage situations and improvised explosive devices. They're also learning how to work in dark areas.
The training is the second phase of a two-part program designed to teach police officers and first responders to safely and effectively respond to and stop an active shooter.
About 175 officers throughout South Carolina were trained during the first phase earlier this year.
