Ala. tourism official 'disappointed' with SC oil spill marketing

Story continues below mapOil Spill Location Forecast for May 21 An Alabama tourism booster is rankled by his South Carolina counterparts' attempt to lure travelers who are rethinking their Gulf Coast vacation plans.Leon Maisel, president and CEO of the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau, lamented Thursday plans by at least three chambers of commerce in South Carolina to snag visitors who had planned trips to the Gulf Coast.The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce plans to spend $50,000 on Internet advertising in Tennessee and Alabama in response to the oil spill. The neighboring Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce will consider similar opportunities once a new fiscal year begins July 1. The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce also is tailoring ongoing Internet and e-mail promotions for people whose sights are shifting from the Gulf.
