SC officials check Charleston bridge for corrosion

May 24, 2010 7:39:00 AM - thestate.com
South Carolina transportation officials are checking the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge between Charleston and Mount Pleasant for salt corrosion.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday that some inch-wide pieces will be removed from the road bed to determine if salt has made it to the concrete below the driving surface. A 2-inch-thick layer of concrete mixed with latex forms the driving surface.

The longest cable-stayed bridge in North America cost more than $630 million when it was finished five years ago.

Bridge maintenance engineer Gary Kinard says officials want to know if saltwater is damaging the concrete base. Salt could cause steel used to reinforce the slabs to rust.

Cables supporting the bridge deck were checked last week.
