Work on the Uma Oya project will be expedited. The total expenditure will be in the region of 50 Billion rupees.
A special discussion was held to expedite the construction of the Uma Oya scheme, giving priority to it following the mediation of the President. A discussion with Irrigation and Mahaweli officials was presided by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. The Minister along with the officials inspected the scheme. A suitable compensation will be paid to 250 families who will be displaced following the construction of the main dam of the scheme. The Minister said they had already received the nod of the Cabinet for this purpose.
In parallel to the main dam of the reservoir, a tunnel which will be 21 kilometres in length from Puhulpola to Wellawaya will be constructed.
It is desired to provide water for irrigation and drinking purposes for the Moneragala and Hambantota Districts. The extent which can be irrigated by this scheme is 2000 hectares. A power plant will come up at Wellawaya where the tunnel ends. The Iranian Government will be providing 85 percent of the total expenses while the balance will be borne by the Government.
