Commentary: Pizza chain takes heat for Facebook firing

You can’t blame the owners of Brixx Pizza for being glad to see a new week. The one that just ended was a doozy for their pizza chain.
They endured a blizzard of mostly negative commentary online after The Observer published the story of Ashley Johnson, a waitress who got upset after a lunch couple kept her waiting past quitting time and then left her what she considered a bad tip.
When she went on Facebook to vent, it got back to her bosses, and they fired her for violating company policies against bad-mouthing customers and casting Brixx in a negative light on social networks.
People all across the country – and as far away as Australia – were fascinated by the story. Some dude from San Francisco e-mailed me to say “millions” of people out there were fuming over what they considered an ill-considered firing. People swamped Brixx’s Facebook page
with snarling comments, and several “boycott Brixx” pages popped up.
