The President was speaking during a meeting to review progress of the Highways Ministry. Nearly 12,000 kilometres of the national road network comes under the Highways Ministry and the Road Development Authority. About 4,000 kilometres had already been developed. The President said reconstruction should be undertaken giving priority to public needs.
Last year, the ADB gave 87 Billion rupees to develop the road network. It had provided 29.6 Billion rupees for this purpose upto April this year. About 300 kilometres of rural roads had been repaired in the first quarter of this year. Construction of the Matara – Colombo, Colombo – Katunayake, Colombo – Kandy and the Colombo outer circle roads came up for discussion.
Giving his views, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa pointed out the need to improve the roads in Hambantota. Deputy Ministers Nirmala Kotalawela and Mervyn Silva, President Secretary Lalith Weeratunga, Finance Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera and Highways Secretary Wasantha Karannagoda joined in this meeting.
