Wesak this year is significant to the Colombo city, its suburbs and the rest of the island as the public are able to engage in religious observances in a peaceful environment after 30 years and also due to the opportunity they receive to view Wesak decorations and illuminations without any fear. Buddhist devotees are prepared to engage in religious ceremonies including the observation of “Sil”, participating in meditations and listening to Dhamma sermons. There will also be Pandals, Wesak lanterns, Bakthi Gee recitals and Dansalas.
The war heroes who were engaged in humanitarian operations last year to liberate the country from terrorism are getting ready to light Wesak lanterns symbolizing the freedom achieved. Large crowds are expected within the city to view Pandals and Wesak illuminations. Several Wesak zones are organized in the Colombo city. Special trains are operating from today. Several additional trains have been deployed to provide these services.
Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board M.D. Bandusena said bus services will be operating centering the main temples in the island.
