Eight Beaufort County Council members added their names to the list of people calling for Treasurer Joy Logan's resignation Monday night.
A resolution proposed by Stu Rodman was approved unanimously with council member Laura Von Harten absent. Council members Bill McBride and Steven Baer each called for Logan's resignation two weeks ago. Attempts to reach Von Harten Tuesday were unsuccessful.
"We don't have the authority to remove her," Rodman said Tuesday, "but I think we have the obligation to let the community know what we think." He added that the resolution was an important step toward renewing the "general credibility of the government."
Earlier this month, Casaundra White, a former Treasurer's Office employee, was charged with embezzling more than $210,000 of the county's money. White allegedly was caught stealing $600 in cash in 2007 but was not fired. She later resigned, then was rehired by Logan.
Council Chairman Weston Newton, R-Bluffton, said during Monday's council meeting that if White had not been rehired, the county would have been saved the cost of multiple audits, as well as some of the money that was allegedly embezzled.
