Investigators with the S.C. Forestry Commission have charged a Lexington County firefighter with two counts of arson for brush fires that burned May 14 and 15. Larry Lucius Williamson Jr., 36, of Swansea was arrested and released on bond.
The two fires burned about 10 acres, including part of a pine farm, around Mack Edisto Road Extension. Tire tracks and boot prints found at the scene matched Williamsons, the commission said.
Williamson confessed to these fires and dozens of others dating back several years, the commission reported. Williamson has been a volunteer firefighter with the Lexington County Fire Service for about 10 years. The fire service cooperated with the investigation.
Williamson also confessed to leaving clues behind in order to throw off any potential suspicion from himself, investigators said. On one occasion, they said, he nailed to a tree the W-2 tax form belonging to an acquaintance. On another, he left a note in his own handwriting that said, I will be back soon.
