Sri Lankans commemorate Wesak in a peaceful atmosphere
Today is Wesak Full Moon Poya Day. It is the holiest event among Buddhists marking the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing away of the Buddha who was born at Kapilavastu in Nepal twenty six centuries ago.
It is the most important sacred day for the Buddhists the world over. Prince Siddhartha was born on Weak Full Moon Day His father was Sudodana who ruled in Kpilawastu. The young Prince Siddhartha married Yasodara. They had a son Rahula. Thirteen years after marriage.At the age of 29, he went in search of real happiness. Prince Siddhartha realized the two extremes – the enjoyment of pleasures and self-mortification will in no way help to achieve Vimukthi from the state of Dukka. Later on Wesak Poya Day he achieved Enlightment and became the fully awakened one. As the three event in the life of Buddha – the birth of Prince Siddhartha, his attainment of the perfect enlightenment in his 35th year under the shade of Sri Maha Bodhi in Buddha Gaya, his demise after the noble ministry that last 45 years in Kusinara, occurred on Wesak Full Moon Poya Day.
Religious observances are being organized in almost all temples to mark this important religious day.
The Poya Dhamma sermon was organized as usual at Temple Trees. President Rajapaksa, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and family members were present.
