A Lexington County man and woman have been charged with leaving two preschool girls alone in a locked, urine-soaked room in a Pelion house.
The girls, ages 2 and 4, have been taken into custody by the S.C. Department of Social Services and placed in foster care, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said Thursday.
“The children were hungry, frightened and crying” when deputies found them, said Metts, who visited the house later. “The room had so much dirt and disarray that cockroaches probably wouldn’t have moved in.”
The adults who cared for the children, Amanda Leigh Justice, 24, and Joey Dean Lucas, 41, both of Pelion, are in the Lexington County jail charged with unlawful conduct toward a child by a legal custodian. Justice is the biological mother of the two girls, and Lucas is the man she lives with, Metts said. The house is owned by Lucas.
