External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has emphasized the sea change in Sri Lanka since the victory over terrorism.
During meetings with Obama Administration Officials and Members of the US Congress, the Minister noted the sea change evident in the island. He said Sri Lanka is a land of great potential. He called for deeper ties between Sri Lanka and the United States. Sri Lanka is in unreserved agreement with last year’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee calling for multi-faceted relationship that embraces trade, security and economic ties. On human rights, the Minister emphasized the importance of Sri Lanka’s efforts at reconciliation.
The event was moderated by Walter Lohman, head of the Heritage Asian Study Programme. The Minister who is currently on an official visit to the US also met with Under Secretary of Defence of Policy Michele Flournoy. His visit will culminate with a meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today.
