Ranil Utters Yet Another LieRanil Utters Yet Another Lie

May 29, 2010 2:48:30 PM - thesundayleader.lk

In an interview published yesterday Saturday 29th, in a daily English newspaper Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe not only uttered a blatant lie but also publicly defamed the professional reputations of the Publisher/Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of The Sunday Leader.

In this interview Wickremesinghe refers to an interview conducted and published by this newspaper elsewhere in our pages today saying, “Now they have got a businessman to throw mud at me and when this businessman gave an interview to that newspaper in his office, the editor of the newspaper and the head of the company were also present in the room, but that is not revealed in the interview. So where is transparency?” unquote. Wickremesinghe is referring to the interview carried in this newspaper today with Chairman of the Hatton National Bank Rienzie Wijetilleke.  At no stage were Publisher/Chairman Lal Wickrematunge and Editor Frederica Jansz ever present in Wijetilleke’s room before, during or after the interview.

In response to Wickremesinghe’s blatant and deliberate lie, Rienzie Wijetilleke said, “I wish to place on record that I gave this interview to The Sunday Leader to be published on May 30, 2010 in the national interest.  I have not met Lal Wickrematunge and Frederica Jansz in the recent past.  Not in my office – not anywhere.”

The Sunday Leader will this week institute legal action against Ranil Wickremesinghe for publicly uttering a blatant untruth, naming and defaming the professional credibility and integrity of both Lal Wickrematunge and Frederica Jansz.  The Sunday Leader will also seek a public apology from the newspaper concerned for publishing a blatant untruth.
