It is with some concern that I learnt of the possibility of the government of President Rajapaksa signing the Comprehensive Economic Agreement (CEPA) with India. This agreement, which was due to be signed in 2008, was shelved due to opposition from various parties. Now that the elections are over, the CEPA has raised its ugly head and the signs are that the government would sign this agreement. CEPA would destroy our local industries and lest we forget, 80 percent of world trade passes through our shores and it seems we Sri Lankans are blind to it but not India which has had a hidden agenda which is to dominate Sri Lanka economically.
India can never ever be trusted and should we allow further intrusion through this agreement, we shall regret it for many years to come. However much we may be indebted to India, China and the rest for helping us to combat and defeat LTTE, we cannot abrogate our democratic rights and independence. All Sri Lankans should exert pressure on the President and his government to distance itself from India.
