A new luxury train service between Katunayake and Colombo is operative. The ‘Airport Express’ provides the much needed rail link between the Airport and Colombo.
The Railway Department expects to continue this service which has been launched to transport foreigners including the guests to the IIFA Festival.
It was inaugurated this morning under the patronage of several Ministers and Parliamentarians.
Minister Kumara Welgama, Deputy Ministers Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Rohana Dissanayake and Dayasritha Tissera and Parliamentarians Namal Rajapaksa and Sudharshani Fernandopulle travelled to Colombo in the train. A special function was held at the former Secretariat Station near the Hilton Corner in Colombo Fort to welcome the guests who arrived in the train. They also got involved in the inauguration of the Railway Station.
The initiative to operate the train service was taken following on a directive by the President. This service is exclusively for the use of airline passengers. It will not stop at any other railway station.
