SC parole board delays vote on cop killer

Mar 19, 2010 6:13:00 AM - thestate.com
The state parole board has delayed a vote on releasing a man convicted of killing a South Carolina sheriff's deputy and his father in 1975, despite a request from the victims' family.

The Greenville News reported Thursday that Charles Wakefield Jr. originally was sentenced to die for killing former Deputy Frank Looper and his father, Rufus Looper Jr.

A board spokesman says the panel postponed a vote until a psychological report can be completed.

Adele McAuley and other surviving members of Looper's family told the parole board they have forgiven Wakefield and want him paroled so they can reach a sense of peace. McAuley says she is hopeful.

Representatives of the Greenville Police Department and prosecutor Bob Ariail's office oppose the release of Wakefield, who has said he's innocent.
