Circuit Court Judge James Barber has halted the April 6 election for Columbia City Council District 2 and has rescheduled it for June 15.The judge?s order, which was handed down today, sets the following schedule:
-Filing for the office: March 29 - April 16
-Public notice of the election: March 28 and April 4
-Election day: June 15.But neighborhood leader Durham Carter has already filed an appeal with the state Supreme Court. Legal briefs in the case are due by 5 p.m. Tuesday, and the court could make a decision next week.Columbia City Council members had scheduled this election for April 6 because of a state law that requires vacancy?s on City Council to be filled at the city?s next regularly scheduled election. But former District 2 Councilman E.W. Cromartie resigned March 9. The filing period to replace him closed at noon today, giving District 2 candidates just 18 days to get to know the candidates for office.
