Horry County officials will continue this week to seek family members of a 49-year-old man who stabbed himself to death at the Myrtle Beach International Airport, said Chris Burroughs, a deputy coroner.
Officials have withheld the name of the man in an attempt to locate his family, Burroughs said.
An airport employee spotted the man at 10:45 a.m. Friday and confronted him, at which point he stabbed himself several times, officials said.
The intruder, who was not a passenger of any flight, suffered several superficial stab wounds to the abdomen and a more serious wound to his upper chest, said Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler. He died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center at 11:05 a.m. Friday. The incident occurred on the airfield, Kegler said.
How the man got into a restricted area of Myrtle Beach International Airport remains under local and federal investigation.
