Many Midlands residents will be surprised by the official Columbia rainfall totals from Memorial Day weekend.
Somehow, the scattered showers that drenched many areas mostly missed the official gauges at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in Lexington County and Owens Field in Columbia.
Columbia Metro got .75 of an inch of rainfall Friday through Monday, and Owens Field got 1.36 inches. But weather service co-op stations operated by trained observers in other areas indicated heavier rainfall 2.08 inches in Cedar Creek, 2.32 inches in Batesburg-Leesville, 2.47 inches in Newberry and 2.76 inches at Shaw Air Force Base.
And the rivers should start rising this week because the Upstate got hit even harder, with 4.16 inches at the Greenville-Spartanburg airport.
