The Colombo High Court today imposed a fine of 10 million rupees on a captain of a vessel for polluting the sea.
Senior State Counsel Riaz Hamza appearing on behalf of the State complained that the accused the Captain of the vessel ‘M T Grand of Turkey’ had released Sulphuric Acid into the territorial waters of Sri Lanka in Trincomalee. He had done from 5th to the 9th of April last year. The accused pleaded guilty for the charge. Consequently the High Court imposed a fine of 10 million rupees on the captain of the vessel. In default of the payment of the fine the accused was sentenced to one year imprisonment.
