Getting the city rid of beggars, stray dogs and garbage, in that order of priority, are apparently Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s goals, in order to make Colombo a better place to live in.
“Now that he has got the beggars removed, the next will be the other two priorities,” a wag closely associated with tourism told The Sunday Leader.
Garbage is at a critical level, though Colombo has got over this menace a few days ago, not so the suburbs, with the problem attributed to the non availability of any garbage dump sites.
Though the Government has been grappling with this issue for two decades, even going to the extent of sending “experts” overseas, to countries such as Malaysia, to ascertain how they solved this problem, it is yet to come up with a sustainable solution to this crisis here.
