Prof discusses military school's role in Civil War

Mar 23, 2010 4:31:00 AM - thestate.com
A history professor at a South Carolina military college is discussing the school's role in the Civil War.

The war began in 1861 in Charleston, home to The Citadel. Professor Kyle Sinisi gives an illustrated talk on Tuesday that focuses on the role of the college and cadets in the war.

Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor in April 1861 opened the war. But the first shots came earlier when cadets from The Citadel fired on and turned back a Union ship trying to resupply the fort.

The Big Red flag, which flew over Morris Island when the cadets fired, was recently returned to the college. It was loaned to the school after it was found in storage at the State Historical Society of Iowa.
