Places of Buddhist worship to be uplifted

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has referred to a special programme planned to uplift Buddhist places of worship in rural areas.

He said that there are 10,336 temples in the island. There are no Buddhist Monks for about 400 temples. It is difficult to maintain some of them. As such, the Prime Minister noted that they expect to launch a fund as the Maha Sangha had agreed upon.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the presentation of the Act of Appointment of the Deputy Sangha Chief of the Salpiti Korale in Colombo to the Ven. Boralugoda Indraratana thera, the Chief Incumbent of the Maakumbura Purana Vihare in Kottawa. The Scroll related to the appointment was presented to the Prelate by the Prime Minister. Among those present were Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena and Bandula Gunawardena.
