Plans are underway to increase the number of locomotives to 55 within the next 21 days. Railway trade unions will be supporting this programme.
Minister Kumara Welgama opined that the required spare parts for the repair of locomotives which have been removed from service, have already been imported. The Minister revealed this during a meeting with trade union representatives and the Railway hierarchy. At present, 46 locomotives are in operation. He said their intention was to increase this to 60. The Minister issued instructions to the officers to take action for the immediate resolution of problems confronted by the Railway employees and also to fill the existing vacancies. Ministry officials also joined this meeting.
