The resolution to extend the emergency has been approved with a majority of 68 votes. 121 votes were cast in favour while 53 members opposed the resolution. While the UNP voted against the Emergency extension, one of its Parliamentarians Abdul Cader voted with the Government.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has said that the required legislation to make the freedom enjoyed at present a long term measure will be enacted soon. Moving the resolution for the Emergency extension in the House this afternoon, the Prime Minister said that the entire nation, irrespective of differences, appreciated the victory achieved by the war heroes. Following this victory, many initiatives had to be taken and legislation enacted to make the freedom enjoyed at present genuine. The necessary activities in this respect were in place. Also, the required action will be taken in future. He added that action was being taken to commemorate the first anniversary of the elimination of terrorism in the near future on a grand scale.
