U. S. Ambassador in Colombo Patricia Butenis presented a donation of Rs. 100,000 to Sathva Mithra, an organization that advocates for the humane treatment of animals in Sri Lanka.
The gift was from proceeds from the American Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Ambassador’s Ball” held in March 2010. Sathva Mithra is one of the most active animal rights organizations in Sri Lanka. Through the efforts of volunteers, Sathva Mithra campaigns for the modernization of animal welfare laws and seeks to build public awareness of the needs of animals. Four years ago, members of the organization were successful in encouraging the Government of Sri Lanka to adopt a “no kill” directive, whereby the community dog population is controlled through anti-rabies vaccines and sterilization rather than by euthanasia.
