If youre driving on I-26 or other roads leading toward the coast Monday and spy several gatherings of uniformed people and traffic cones, dont be alarmed. Its the annual test of the state hurricane evacuation effort.
Staffers from several state agencies will gather at key intersections where highway flow could be reversed for evacuation routes: I-26, U.S. 21, U.S. 278, U.S. 501 and S.C. 544. The highways wont be reversed for the exercise, which shouldnt interfere with traffic flow. But drivers should be cautious on those highways when they see the exercise participants gathered on road shoulders 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday.
Later in the week, state officials will practice their response to a terrorist attack in the Upstate, with staffers gathering in reaction to simulated attacks in Anderson, Abbeville, Greenwood, Oconee and Pickens counties on Friday and Saturday.
